Court grants bail to 63 Obigbo residents detained by the army, police and DSS

63 residents of Obigbo in Rivers State detained in three facilities belonging to the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police in Abuja have been granted bail by a Nigerian court.

Human rights and advocacy research group, the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) said the release of the detainees followed the consideration of their bail application filed on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 before an Abuja Grade 11 Magistrate Court sitting in Wuse.

It was alleged that the freed victims were part of over 400 innocent and defenceless Obigbo residents, including over 60 girls and young women “abducted” between October and November 2020 at their work places or on their way home from work or while engaging in other lawful social activities.

This Day reported that Intersociety said the release of the 63 abductees was made possible through the efforts of Mr. ER Okoroafor, a British citizen of Igbo nativity and international human rights lawyer.

US rejoins Paris climate accord as Biden continues to reverse Trump’s legacy

The United States has rejoined the Paris climate accord, just 107 days after it left as President Joe Biden continues to reverse Donald Trump’s legacy.

The return became official on Friday February 19, almost a month after President Joe Biden told the United Nations that America wants back in.

‘A cry for survival comes from the planet itself,’ Biden said in his inaugural address. ‘A cry that can´t be any more desperate or any more clear now.’

Donald Trump announced its withdrawal from the Paris accord in 2019 but it didn’t become effective until November 4, 2020, making the United States the first nation to formally withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

According to Mail Online, the Paris accord requires countries to set their own voluntary targets for reducing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.

And the only binding requirement is that nations have to accurately report on their efforts.

But Trump told world leaders at a virtual summit in November that the agreement was designed to cripple the U.S. economy, not save the planet.

‘To protect American workers, I withdrew the United States from the unfair and one-sided Paris climate accord, a very unfair act for the United States,’ Trump said in a video statement from the White House to the Group of 20 summits hosted by Saudi Arabia.

Biden signed an executive order on his first day in office reversing the pullout ordered by his predecessor to the climate accord.

Mitchell Bernard, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, said Biden’s order to rejoin the accord makes the U.S. part of the global solution for climate change rather than part of the problem.

“This is swift and decisive action,” Bernard said in a statement. “It sets the stage for the comprehensive action we need to confront the climate crisis now, while there’s still time to act.”

Trump die-hard fans ditch Twitter en masse after his suspension from the platform

President Donald Trump’s die hard fans have started deactivating their Twitter accounts after he was permanently banned from the platform.

Earlier today, Twitter permanently suspended Trump’s account two days after the siege at the Capitol that led to the death of five people and few hours after he tweeted that he will not be attending Biden’s inauguration.

Twitter explained why they took the decision in a statement, saying: “After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.”

A few hours after President Trump’s account was suspended, “Goodbye Twitter” started trending  as his diehard supporters began to deactivate their accounts.

“Goodbye Twitter friends. See you @parler,” said one user.

Some top conservatives also shared Parler accounts on Twitter, encouraging their followers to migrate there.
